A big name for a laid back place...

... San Cristóbal de las Casas, it's a long name, locals just say San Cristóbal. It feels like we got here longer ago than just yesterday morning. Probably because we slept for several hours after breakfast it feels like we spent another night here.

Well, after an all night bus ride here from Oaxaca, we wandered around, found a place for brekkie, then crashed at Posada Mi Casa, a hostel we found, once it was open. After napping for several hours, we grogily got up and spent most of a grumpy afternoon wanderig around town, looking into the amber shops the region is famous for and looking for good coffee. That evening was spent a little less grumpy after some excellent cappuccinos and a hot shower. It's amazing sometimes the magical properties of hot water flowing over your body and its ability to solve all one's stresses and annoyances. In this case mostly just annoyances, and those being comprised basically of the fact that it was light out, that I wasn't asleep on something soft and comfy, and that I was awake.

Today was a fun day, much improved over yesterday! San Cristóbal is a cool city. And starting out a day with fresh mango and chocolaté oaxaqueño, I felt like it was bound to be a good one! Walked up the hill to Iglesia Guadelupe, where there was a great view of the city. We wandered the markets, picked out a couple pieces of amber, people watched and partook of some more wonderfully fresh coffee. San Cristóbal is a fascinating town blending colonial Mexico, Mayan culture and people selling their wares, and an eclectic group of people both local and foreign, residents and travelers. Tonight Leslie and I are going to see a local show, it's the story from Mayan history of the ruler of Palenque being captured by a neighboring tribe. The show is said to showcase rich costumes, prehispanic music, dance and rituals! Should be fun!

So tomorrow we leave Mexico and head to Quetzaltenango (Xela), Guatemala which will be home base for the next few weeks as I try to remember what I've forgotten about Spanish and Leslie continues to polish hers. It's been fun Mexico, until next time...
